If you're a small business owner, you’ve probably felt the pressure to be “doing more”—more Instagram, more content, more everything.

It can feel like a full-time job just to keep up. And let’s be honest, most of us didn’t start our businesses to become social media managers.

But here’s what I know from years of working with small business owners: some of the most powerful growth doesn’t come from endless posting—it comes from getting rooted locally.

There’s so much untapped opportunity in your own backyard. People want to support small businesses. They just need to know you exist—and they need to trust you. That trust is built faster and more deeply through in-person connection.

Here are a few ways to start showing up locally in a way that’s both strategic and heart-centered:

1. Map Out Your Local Hot Spots

Make a list of places your ideal clients already go—coffee shops, yoga studios, wellness centers, gyms, coworking spaces, farmer’s markets, bookshops. These are perfect spaces to leave a beautiful flyer, a sample product, or a postcard with a special offer.

2. Introduce Yourself

Don’t underestimate the power of simply saying hello. Stop by local shops, strike up a conversation with other business owners, and share what you do. It’s not about pitching—it’s about connecting.

3. Attend and Support Local Events

If you want people to come to your events or support your business, show up for theirs. Building community is a two-way street. When people see you as part of the local fabric, they’re more likely to support your work.

4. Collaborate With Complementary Businesses

Find other business owners who share your values but aren’t in competition with you—like a massage therapist partnering with a yoga studio, or a life coach teaming up with a nutritionist. Create a co-hosted event or shared promotion to reach each other’s audiences.

5. Become a Known Resource
